Curriculum

Basic Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program

Eight of the basic science Ph.D. programs are united under one umbrella program that admits a single cohort of first-year students. The list includes Biological Chemistry, Cancer Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics Development and Disease, Immunology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Microbiology, and Neuroscience.

Year 1: Common Curriculum & Specialization

  • Shared Foundation: Students complete a common curriculum consisting of a core course, a minimum of two laboratory rotations, and thorough training in the responsible conduct of research.
  • Program Selection: During the second semester, students typically transition into their chosen individual Ph.D. programs.

Year 2: Candidacy & Dissertation Committee

  • Qualifying Exam: Students take an exam to officially become a candidate for a Ph.D. in their selected program.
  • Committee Assembly: Students are expected to assemble a dissertation committee of faculty members who will oversee their research throughout the remainder of their training.

Independent Curricula

Each degree program below features separate and independent curricula. The programs may share some elements of the Basic Biomedical Sciences (BBS) umbrella program. View the individual program tiles below for program-wise details.

Biomedical Education

NOTE: Clinical Psychology Ph.D. students do NOT participate in the Basic Science Core Curriculum. The Clinical Psychology Program admits first-year students directly into their APA-accredited training program with a separate curriculum.
