MSTP Mentoring Communities (Firms)
MSTP Firms create close-knit, faculty-led mentoring communities that foster professional identity as physician-scientists and expand their mentorship networks across all years of training. Firms meet monthly and are led by distinguished faculty actively balancing innovative research and clinical practice. Topics include career pathways, research development, specialty choice, and work–life integration.
Led by distinguished faculty who balance active clinical duties with groundbreaking research, MSTP Firms meet monthly to offer invaluable guidance and represent diverse specialties and research interests.

Brown & Goldstein Firm
“I have a genuine passion for cultivating future generations of physician-scientists with a wide range of life experiences. Each of the Firm namesake physician-scientists embodies what I strive to become as a physician-scientist and provided critical mentorship or advice at different stages of my personal career. I hope to be that kind of mentor and role model to future generations of physician-scientists by educating them on future obstacles they will face and help keep them on track.”

Gilman Firm
“Physician-scientists and physician-engineers are absolutely essential to the ecosystem of biomedical research. My mission is to offer resources and guidance to the next generation of MSTP trainees as well as help foster a sense of community- students are part of a rich legacy of medical innovation, here at UTSW and across the globe. While every trainee’s path is different, there are common challenges that we can address together. And at the end of training, we have the best job in the world- taking care of patients while pushing science forward.”

Hobbs Firm
“My goal as a Firm leader is to pass on the joy of discovery to training MSTPs and encourage them to embrace their unique perspective as experts in both science and medicine. I want to help students find a sense of belonging on campus, without which they cannot reach their full potential, and appreciate the unique nature of the investment they are making in their own development so they can optimize the returns on that investment.”

Wilson Firm
“I believe each trainee should develop an individualized career plan and that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t fit everyone. Serving as a Firm leader allows me to help students explore career options and find training environments of excellence that inspire their enjoyment and success as MSTP students. I help open any doors I can for our students, then let their talent, work ethic and outstanding UTSW training take the next steps.”
